Coffee time!
Coffee? Oh yes, nothing better than a coffee break at work! This is what gets me through a day most of the times and this wee sketch happened with coffee in mind.
Great soft crayons in use here, as usual, oh, and i left it monochrome. Colours sometimes take something important away. I know, nearly a paradox! But in my opinion actually a real fact as well. Don't get me wrong, I am all for the 'colourfulness' and fun and rainbows, but from the very start of my drawing career, I was quite conscious of keeping a balance in my drawings. In everything. Not too much chaos if I know that is not my intention. Not too much colour if I know its not the result that I want to achieve. Not too much shading, changes, wriggly lines. Not too overcrowded with different shapes overlapping, floating in the background or just simply distracting from the main theme. (Unless, of course, chaos is my main theme!) Because I always ask myself, what is it that makes my drawing or picture interesting?, and whatever the answer I need to make sure it is the most prominent part of the composition and that nothing else is distracting the viewer.
Also, what can be interesting, is the fact that we perceive art very differently and somebody can say the teddy bear is the main focus of the girl drawing you can see above. But is it really? There are many other, better and more complicated examples, obviously, but even in a sketch like this one composition is the most important (one of the magic ingredients that makes a drawing interesting, isn't it?) and I always try to think of it somewhere in the early stages of my projects...whether it would work the same way at the end of it, it's a totally different kettle of fish.

Polka dot challenge
I needed a new challenge, something different and something I haven't drawn before. Basically, I wanted to draw something I wouldn't thought of drawing normally. And so, I started thinking what would make me push my comfort zones a little bit, get out of the usual pattern and forget about boundaries (that, most likely, I set myself in the past, of course).
Flat ears were the shape I draw first and then it just happened from there. As I mentioned before, I hardly ever know what my drawing is going to look like in advance, so I didn't know what I would come up with and in that situation even more so! I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. The thrill of the unknown, the discovering of how different (definitely positive different!) you can feel when not being afraid of trying something new. It's very exciting and I really need to make sure to remember that for later.

Balance
A sketch done only by using one Derwent Graphitint pencil. Amazing colour differences and great shading effect. Also, easy to work with as they are very soft. One of my favourites as you might have already noticed!

Bernard and how the magic happens.
Meet Bernard. He also appeared quite unexpectedly one evening. That is how most of the amazing things happen...at least in my case. Sometimes people ask me if I know exactly what I am going to draw before putting pencil on paper and my answer is - 'no'. Well, nine out of ten no, because there are some projects which demand full concentration and precise theme, like this one, for example:

Up!
A very good friend of mine asked me recently if I would be up for decorating her kids room. The whole family just adores the movie UP and wanted some themes from it painted on the walls to make the room look more colourful. I jumped right in, as I'm always up for a new challenge, and painting pictures on walls on a large scale (at least ten times larger than I would normally do!) was quite exciting!
Here are the results:

Finally up and running !
Welcome!
This is a place where magic happens. I have been thinking about it for long enough, so here it is. My art, my illustrations, doodles and sketches, some finished some not but definitely worth a mention. I will also be sharing some of my thoughts on illustration, art and children books. I'm sure you will find it interesting and amusing enough to have a good look at the pictures as well. Please enjoy and feel free to contact me, comment or share!
Away we go
colour pencil
11 x 11 inch
A wee illustration I did recently. It started with just the girl but then somehow that big guy appeared trailing after her. Figured they must be friends, lost in a different world, trying to work out where to find magical candy floss and... or something along those lines.
Derwent colour pencil
250 x 340 mm
A drawing I did for my brother who is an amazing DJ and loves afrobeat. It was used as a design cover for one of his mixtapes.
Bumble Ladybird
mixed media
370 x 300 mm
Great fun with layering colours. I used the water soluble pencils and then some soft crayons on top. Also, I experimented with different brands and, I have to say, Derwent Inktense are my best choice at the moment just because the intensity of colours, actually!
Princess
mixed media
210 x 297 mm
A sad princess lost in thoughts... I found this brilliant sugar paper and tried to play around with colours and different media on it, but mostly coloured pencils and crayons. The surface is quite rough and because of the interesting shade, it provides a great background for bright colours. In this one, I love how the whites are coming out, looking very fresh.
